The Challenges and Benefits of Recycling Used Cell Phones

ReCellular is proud to establish this new forum for communication about the challenges and benefits of cell phone recycling.

Every day brings new focus and attention to the environmental challenges we face. This focus is impacting everything we do as a society, whether it is the home owner buying renewable energy credits from their local energy company or Wal-Mart driving real environmental change throughout their company, and their suppliers. That focus is needed – the challenges have never been greater. And with that focus comes opportunities for us as a company.

When cell phones were first introduced, I doubt anybody would have predicted that there would be over two billion in use around the world, but here we are. With that spectacular growth comes the very real problem of what to do with the old ones.

When we started this industry 16 years ago, processing 300 used cell phones a month was a fantastic success. Now we process that many every couple of minutes. This year we are on track for our biggest year ever – approximately 4,000,000 phones collected for reuse and recycling from consumers around the world. But it isn’t enough. Next year it will be 6,000,000 – and it still isn’t enough.

This blog is one of many tools we are using to get the word out about phone reuse and recycling. It is a forum for discussion about how to improve participation in the variety of programs established across the United States, Canada and elsewhere. And it is a place to celebrate the progress that has already been made in providing responsible homes for the millions of used cell phones already in use around the globe.
